Hospital Medicine Fellowship Program

There is a tremendous shortage of training opportunities for academic hospitalists. The Hospital Medicine Fellowship Program will develop a practical program to introduce hospitalists to outcomes research to set them on a track towards greater academic productivity.

The program will consist of the intensive 7 week Summer Program in Outcomes Research Training (SPORT) in residence at the University of Chicago.  The SPORT includes introductions to biostatistics, clinical epidemiology, and health services research, and a research proposal development workshop with small group mentoring to help the fellows develop a research project. Fellows will also receive one-on-one mentoring to develop an individualized learning plan, including didactics and mentoring based on local resources when they return to their home institution.

Course fees and a housing stipend are available for 4 hospitalists to participate in the 2008 Summer Program in Outcomes Research Training (SPORT) that will run from July 7 – August 22, 2008. Applicants should send 1) a cover letter, 2) letter of support from their Program Director, Division Chief, or Chair, and 3) resume to:

Dr. David Meltzer MD, PhD
c/o Jacqueline Barrera
5841 S. Maryland MC 2007
Chicago, IL 60637

Deadline: January 15, 2008

Initial inquiries can be directed to jbarrera@medicine.bsd.uchicago.edu.

Preference will be given to candidates with significant potential and commitment, but who do not already have highly developed research trajectories and therefore would benefit relatively more from the limited experience we can provide in a 7 week training session. Letters from the candidate and their clinical supervisors should describe their commitment to establishing a research program in hospital medicine, the rationale for wishing the candidate to attend this program,  and assuring the candidate’s availability for the entire period of the summer program from July 7- August 22, 2008.
